Professor Shonekan taught me how to care for my patients and future patients from many different lenses, not just a nursing point of view. She taught me the importance of seeing my patients as whole people, recognizing their pain, their fear, and the fact that they’re not in their usual environment. She taught me to remain open-minded and to pivot in situations that may become challenging or even hostile. She showed me that I belong in nursing and encouraged me to take up space, professionally and respectfully.
Most importantly, she taught me how to be an advocate not only for myself but also for my patients and for any future endeavors I pursue. Professor Shonekan doesn’t teach simply because it’s her job; she teaches in a way that cultivates leaders. I feel truly blessed and grateful to have had an educator who took the time to guide me through my mistakes and teach me the correct way to do things, all while remaining gentle and patient.

Ms. Shonekan has a well rounded background and experience in critical care, Med. Surg. and management which allows her to give excellent patient care. Her clinical judgment, assessment skills and critical care knowledge are evident in how she gives nursing care that is compassionate, proactive and empowering.
